Cameron's Visual COMsumption


Throughout his daily routine, Cameron is constantly in contact with various forms of visual, verbal, and audio communication. Although Cameron does not pay much attention to broadcast television, he often interacts with visually-stimulating media such as Instagram, Facebook, Netflix, etc. He spends many hours of the day listening to music as well, using digital music applications such as iTunes, Spotify, and Soundcloud. Whenever Cameron does not have access to these applications, he enjoys listening to the local FM radio station Classic Hits 104.1. Cameron’s employment as a bartender and attendance at school as a full-time student means that he is constantly engaging in verbal communication with other people. 
For Cameron, two of the most important aspects of visual communication are symbols and colors. Symbols are crucial in visual communication as they can establish identity, relationships, and create meaning within images. One of the best examples is the use of symbols for company branding. Without symbols, companies would be unable to create a brand, and thus have nothing to identify their products with. If used strategically, color can be multi-purposed in the process of visual communication. Color can communicate mood, establish continuity within an image, draw attention to certain aspects of an image, create emphasis and much more. 
Cameron despises shopping at the mall or at any clothing outlet so he makes his best effort to shop online. One of his sought after clothing companies is Jiberish Clothing Company, based out of Denver, Colorado. Their clothing, for the most part, can only be found on the Jiberish website. Cameron finds that their website features a very strong, modern design. Formatted in a way that allows browsers to easily navigate their online store without sacrificing visual appeal, the Jiberish website makes excellent use of space, color, and interactivity. 
Working at a local brewery for the last two years has entrenched a passion for craft beer within Cameron. One of his favorite breweries, Mikkeller Brewing San Diego, has some of the most creative and visually pleasing packaging he has ever seen. The graphic design for each can release maintains an excellent consistency in the use of shapes and font but never fails to create something fresh with great aesthetic. The use of color is also impressive as each can features a combination of bold, attention-getting shades. 
Red Bull is an example of a company that has very strong visual communication on all platforms of digital media. Take, for example, their Instagram page. Red Bull is known for sponsoring alternative sports and their Instagram page is constantly featuring videos and pictures of new events, stunts, and achievements. It is Cameron’s belief that this method of product promotion and advertisement works extremely well. Consumers (like Cameron) are drawn to watch these exciting and compelling videos of athletes performing things that most people have never seen. 
Although Cameron is a heavy consumer of digital media, subjected countless forms of visual communication, he has a media literacy that allows him to filter out most of the unhealthy, unsafe and unwanted material.
